Global day of action for Columbia Dec 10
12 November 2003
Public Services International, together with other global unions, have declared International Human Rights Day on 10 December a day of action to end impunity in Colombia.
Over 3000 trade unionists have been assassinated in the last 15 years as a result of their defence of trade union rights.
None of the people responsible for these crimes have ever been put on trial or punished. PSI believes that the international community, in particular the ILO, has a responsibility to act more decisively to promote democracy and respect for the human rights of trade unionists in Colombia.
Around the world, from Sweden to South Africa, from Barbados to Brazil, from the USA and Puerto Rico to Spain and the UK, public sector trade unions are hosting Colombian colleagues, in alliance with other trade unions and human rights organisations, and will be calling for an end to impunity.
PSI General Secretary Hans Engelberts invites you to join in this action "Nowhere in the world apart from Colombia do unionists work in constant fear for their lives. The government has failed to protect their most basic rights. There can be no genuine trade union rights in these conditions. We continue to urge the government to take concrete steps by identifying and putting on trial those responsible for the assassinations. Your contribution can make a real difference to strengthening the vital role of the international community."
Sign the letter on the PSI website and send it to the President of Colombia or go to the PSI website for further action you or your union can become involved in.
