Higher EducationUnions and students fight higher ed cutsDay of Action planned - April 10The union is taking part in an alliance of education sector groups taking a united stance against higher education cutbacks. The coalition includes representatives from the National Union of Students, the CPSU-SPSF university division, the Parents' and Citizens Federation of NSW, the Teachers' Federation (including the TAFE's division) and the NTEU. The key issues of concern for the coalition include: * attacks on staff and student unionism * HECS increases
National Union of Students President Daniel Kyriacou said: "All the groups have come together because we believe that education should be open and accessible to all students. We believe in an education system where access is decided on merit, not money. We all fear that the proposed government changes will effectively be a massive tax on young Australian that will burden them for their entire lives." National Union of Students NSW State Branch President, Anna York, said: "This meeting was the first of many. We have started planning on what we hope to be a united campaign to ensure tertiary education remains equitable and accessible to all. We will launch our campaign on the 10th of April with a public meeting in Sydney Town Hall, starting at 5.30pm. We plan to extend the coalition to include other trade unions and community groups representing young people."
