Unions step up maternity leave push
23 November 2001
By NSW PSA Women's Unit
The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) has stepped up its push for maternity leave rights launching a new campaign kit to win 14 weeks paid leave for working women.
In 2000 the International Labor Organisation (ILO) endorsed a convention to set 14 weeks paid leave as an international standard, the ACTU is now calling on the Federal Government to ratify this convention.
The campaign kit sets out how Australia lags behind many European and Asian nations in addressing maternity leave as a workplace issue. The kit also sets out strategies in the following areas: employer education, enterprise bargaining, safety new awards and community action.
Lisa Heap, author of the campaign kit, says less than 1/3 of Australia's working women have access to paid maternity leave. Almost all that 1/3 receive less than 12 weeks paid leave.
Copies of the kit are available through State branches or the ACTU website at http://www.actu.asn.au
