Workplace bans bring Victorian justice to a halt
14 January 2004
In pursuit of better wage conditions, Victorian court staff introduced bans on processing paperwork in December last year. Since then the state's civil justice system has been slowly grinding to a halt as it increasingly becomes impossible to start new legal action.
The office of Workplace Relations Minister Rob Hulls says the government wants the issue resolved and is continuing negotiations with the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) whose members include support staff in the justice system. The government's claims that the work bans are unnecessary are refuted by Jim Walton, CPSU Assistant Branch Secretary.
"The bans are on because the government has made a lousy pay offer and they've made the offer based on conditions that would allow the increase in temporary and casual employment"
In addition to the 30 bans in place on court operations, there are a further 230 bans in effect across the public service.
The Victorian Public Service Enterprise Bargaining Agreement 2001 expired at the end of October 2003. CPSU is now in a formal bargaining period with the Victorian Government for the next agreement.
