Lesbian and Gay Rights"Workers Out" 2002 Gay and Lesbian Unionist conference launches04 December 2001
The 2nd World Conference of Lesbian and Gay trade unionists is this week launching its work at NSW Parliament House, marking an 11 month countdown to the conference which will be held prior to the 2002 Gay Games. Following a 1998 conference held in conjunction with the Gay Games in Amsterdam, the 'Workers Out' conference moves to Sydney along with the 2002 Gay Games. Lesbian, Gay, Trangendered and Bisexual workers face open and disguised discrimination in workplaces around the world. "Workers Out" is the first of many steps needed to build closer links between the trade union and queer communities. "Workers Out" will bring together lesbian and gay workers, trade unionists, activists and other key rights organisations from around the world. First on the agenda will be the development of strategies to deal with sexuality discrimination and homophobia in the workplace. The conference organising committee is interested in hearing from anyone who wants to attend or becoming involved in the organising. The conference will open on the afternoon of October 31 2002, for registrations and a social function, and wind up on November 1 in time for the Sydney Gay Games Opening Ceremony. It is to be held at Sydney University, situated five minutes from the centre of the city, which is easily accessible by public transport and within walking distance from Newtown and Glebe - two suburbs filled with excellent cafes, restaurants and bars and thriving gay and lesbian communities. "Workers Out" is endorsed by the Australian Council of Trade Unions Congress, the NSW Labor Council, several international affiliate bodies, and the National Union of Students.
