Training

Prison Officers Trained in Suicide Prevention

23 October 2001

Prison Officers are currently trialling a Suicide/Self Harm Training Resource Kit developed to prevent deaths in custody in Victoria.

This project is a response to the recommendations of the Kirby Report and the Coroner's Inquest into a number of deaths in custody in Victoria in 1999-2000. The kit has been developed by the National Correctional Services Advisory Committee (NCSAC) and has been distributed to all NCSAC member organisations for testing and feedback.

This kit is part of a training package used by correctional services officers to gain nationally recognised qualifications. This package is currently being reviewed. Once the review process is finished and the package endorsed by the Australian National Training Authority, the training package including the Suicide/Self Harm kit will be distributed.

The NCSAC was established in 1994 as a national consultative and advisory group to develop national training standards and materials for the staff of correctional services. NCSAC facilitates national consultation between training managers in correctional services to develop, review and ensure that training materials meet staff needs.
